What you will learn:

  • What life coaching is, and how it differs from counselling and psychotherapy.
  • How coaching can add value to your existing service offering (for example counselling
    or other work roles such as human resources, social services, education, training or
    helping roles).
  • Coaching ethics.
  • Theoretical principles of coaching and change.
  • A model of coaching including skills and techniques.
  • How to construct and deliver a coaching plan incorporating values and strengths.
  • How to conduct a coaching session.
  • How to evaluate a coaching plan.
  • The Accredited Award in Coach Training has four learning outcomes:
    1. Describe Life Coaching and how it differs from counselling/psychotherapy and
      mentoring.
    2. Describe fundamental concepts, principles, theories, and terminology used in
      life coaching.
    3. Assess and document the needs of a life coaching client including difference
      and diversity needs.
    4. Demonstrate life coaching skills, models and techniques.

Key details:

  • The course will commence on 19th February 2026 and run for 15 weeks (1×3 hours per week).
  • The course will be run on a Monday, 6pm to 9pm.
  • The course is limited to 12 participants; the course will only proceed if there are a minimum of 6 participants.
  • The course has been recognised as Accredited Award in Coach Training by the Association for Coaching (this meets the training requirements for Foundation Coach, there are other requirements).
  • Participants receive 1 years’ complimentary Association for Coaching Introductory Associate Membership.
  • Participants are provided with course notes (PPT slides) and a textbook (free of charge).
  • To complete the course, participants are required to complete a coaching assignment – 6 x 1 hour coaching sessions and an 800–1000-word reflection; this must be submitted within 8 weeks of completing the course. The course requires 85% attendance.
  • Qualified counsellors/psychotherapists should note that this is not a licence to practice as a life coach, it provides foundational knowledge to incorporate life coaching skills into your current therapeutic practice.

Like counselling, coaching is currently an unregulated profession in the UK. By successfully completing the course—including a six-hour coaching assignment—you will receive a recognised qualification in coaching skills.

Skills practice is embedded into the course structure.

Yes. The course is accredited, and upon successful completion, you will receive a recognised certificate that can support further study or professional development.

No prior coaching experience is required. A willingness to learn, reflect, and practise is the main requirement. An understanding of basic communication skills is helpful.

You can apply your skills to support others in personal or workplace settings, or progress to more advanced coaching qualifications. Some students also go on to start their own coaching practice.

The course is available in face-to-face, online, or blended formats. It includes a mix of theory, discussion, group work, and practical skills training.

You will attend a weekly session (3 hours) and complete around 2–4 hours of self-study or practice activities between sessions. You’ll also keep a learning log after each session.

Yes. You’ll take part in regular peer coaching exercises and receive supportive feedback. One formal skills observation will also be conducted by the tutor.

Tutors will offer ongoing guidance. You may also have access to online resources, reflective journals, and peer learning groups to support your development.

Yes. You will complete:

  • Weekly learning logs
  • A practical coaching skills assessment
  • A written case study (800–1000 words) based on six (6) coaching sessions with a volunteer client
